The Birds Section will play a key role in this journey, bringing together a diverse and complex avian collection under internationally recognized practices aligned with EAZA, AZA, and WAZA standards.We are looking for an experienced and driven Head Keeper who is ready to lead from the front, take full responsibility, and help build a department that reflects excellence in animal welfare, husbandry, and team performance.You will be part of a historic moment — shaping how birds are managed, cared for, and presented in one of the world’s most iconic zoos.Your Role in the StoryReporting to the Zoological Manager, you will:• Lead the development of the Birds Section as it evolves toward international standards • Take full responsibility for the welfare, health, and management of a diverse avian collection • Build, guide, and inspire a team of keepers to deliver high-quality, consistent care • Establish systems, routines, and protocols that will define the section for years to comeJob Requirements:Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a zoo or wildlife facility with strong exposure to avian speciesHands-on experience with a wide range of birds taxa (raptors- aquatic birds, softbill birds, etc)Proven experience in hand-rearing, capture and restraint, medical support, and biosecurity managementExperience in working in an international or accredited zoological institute is highly preferred.Life in the Field – What You Will Do• Oversee complex husbandry situations, including quarantine, breeding, hand-rearing, and medical care in coordination with veterinarians • Develop and implement feeding regimes tailored to species-specific needs • Design and lead enrichment programs that promote natural behaviours • Ensure the highest standards of hygiene, biosecurity, and safety across all areas • Conduct daily inspections to maintain operational excellence and animal well-being • Lead safe handling, transport, and integration of birds, including managing challenging cases • Maintain accurate records and reporting systems (including ZIMS where applicable) • Support research activities and contribute to practical implementation on the ground • Represent the zoo professionally in internal and external settingsWhy Join Giza Zoo Now• Be part of a once-in-a-career transformation project • Lead from the ground, with real impact on animals and people • Build and shape a department aligned with global zoological standards • Work with a diverse and dynamic avian collection • Leave a professional legacy — and be able to say: “I helped build this.”
