L3 Database Administrator — MySQL & MariaDB

Role SummaryLooking for a DBA own the reliability, performance, and security of our MySQL/MariaDB estate. will design and operate HA/DR topologies, lead incident response (Sev-1), perform deep performance tuning and automate jobs.Key ResponsibilitiesArchitecture & HA/DRDesign, deploy, and operate InnoDB Cluster / Group Replication, Galera/MariaDB Cluster, semi-sync/async replication, multi-source replication.Build and test backup/restore & disaster recovery (RTO/RPO) using Percona XtraBackup / mariabackup / MySQL Enterprise Backup.Implement ProxySQL/HAProxy/MaxScale, Orchestrator, Keepalived/Consul for failover and traffic routing.Performance & CapacityEnd-to-end query and instance tuning: EXPLAIN, optimizer hints, index strategy, partitioning, Performance Schema/sys, slow log analysis.OS and filesystem tuning on Linux (I/O scheduler, NUMA, hugepages, filesystems), buffer pool sizing, redo/log tuning.Capacity planning (CPU/RAM/IOPS/storage), growth forecasts, and cost/perf trade-offs (cloud vs. bare metal).Operations & AutomationCreate infrastructure-as-code and runbooks: Ansible/Terraform/Bash/Python.Continuous monitoring & alerting via Percona PMM, Grafana/Prometheus, Datadog, or SolarWinds DPM.Drive change, patching, and version upgrades with minimal downtime; lead RCAs and corrective actions.Security & ComplianceImplement TLS in-flight, encryption at rest (InnoDB tablespace/redo/binlog), vault-managed keys, password policies.Set up auditing (MariaDB/MySQL Audit Plugin), user/role model, least privilege, and data masking where applicable.Support internal/external audits and follow enterprise standards (change, access, and vulnerability management).Data Engineering PartneringAdvise on schema design, migration strategies, data lifecycle (archiving/purging), and SLOs with app teams.Lead migrations (e.g., MySQL ↔ MariaDB, on-prem ↔ cloud) and version upgrades (10.x/11.x MariaDB, 5.7/8.0 MySQL).Required Qualifications8+ years DBA experience, including 5+ years focused on MySQL and/or MariaDB in production at scale.Proven design/operations expertise with at least two of: Group Replication/InnoDB Cluster, Galera (MariaDB Cluster), semi-sync replication, multi-source replication.Advanced troubleshooting of replication lag, conflicts, GTID issues, transaction deadlocks, and crash recovery.Strong performance skills (indexing, optimizer, schema refactoring, partitioning) and Linux internals for I/O and memory.Hands-on with XtraBackup/mariabackup/MEB, ProxySQL/HAProxy/MaxScale, Orchestrator, and PMM/Grafana.Scripting proficiency (Bash + one of Python/Go). Git-based workflows and CI/CD familiarity.Solid grasp of security hardening, auditing, and encryption features in MySQL/MariaDB.Clear communication; able to lead incidents and present RCAs.Education / CertificationsBachelor’s in Computer Science/Engineering (or equivalent experience).Relevant certifications are a plus.
