Senior Open Pit Mining Engineer

AngloGold Ashanti · Al Bahr al Ahmar, Egypt · Posted 2026-04-10

Jop Purpose: Provide technical leadership to develop and govern safe, optimised open pit mine designs and short‑ to long‑term plans that deliver production targets and maximise life‑of‑mine value. The role integrates geotechnical, environmental, drill & blast, and operational constraints to produce executable plans and forecasts, reconciles actual performance against plan to drive continuous improvement, and supports statutory, audit, and governance requirements for planning and ore reserve reporting.Job Description:Operational / Technical / Core Duties:Open Pit Design & OptimisationDevelop and maintain staged pit and waste dump designs that maximise ore recovery while meeting geotechnical, safety, and environmental design criteria.Run optimization and scenario evaluations (e.g., Whittle/strategic studies) to quantify value drivers and recommend practical improvements to the mine plan.Control design change requests by assessing technical risk and operational impact, updating designs, and communicating approved revisions to stakeholders.Mine Planning & SchedulingLead preparation and review of daily, weekly and monthly execution plans and quarterly forecasts to align mine operations with budget and production targets.Develop annual and life‑of‑mine (LOM) plans, integrating haulage, drill & blast, equipment capability, and sequencing constraints to ensure executable schedules.Coordinate inputs from Survey, Geotechnical, Drill & Blast, and Operations to ensure plans reflect current conditions, constraints, and priorities.Production Reconciliation & Performance ImprovementTrack mining performance against plan (tonnes, grade, stripping, productivity) and quantify variances to identify root causes and corrective actions.Recommend and monitor improvement initiatives (sequence changes, design refinements, operational controls) to reduce delays and stabilise plan adherence.Maintain planning assumptions and datasets by incorporating actuals, updated models, and constraint changes to sustain forecast accuracy.Technical Studies & StandardsSupport technical studies and continuous improvement projects by providing mine planning inputs, analysis, and decision support.Define and apply planning standards, templates, and QA/QC checks to ensure consistent, auditable deliverables across planning horizons.Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) / Compliance Duties:Safety‑in‑Design GovernanceEmbed critical controls and safe design principles into pit, dump, and haul road designs to minimise exposure to highwall, traffic, and operating hazards.Complete and document planning risk assessments for major design or sequence changes, ensuring controls are communicated and implemented before execution.Verify geotechnical compliance (ramp geometry, berms, batter angles) through structured reviews and required sign‑offs prior to release.Regulatory, Environmental & Reporting ComplianceMaintain design and planning documentation to support internal governance, audits, and statutory compliance requirements.Support ore reserve and planning assurance processes (e.g., JORC-aligned reporting) by providing defensible assumptions, schedules, and supporting evidence.Coordinate permit and environmental constraint integration into planning deliverables to prevent non‑compliance and unplanned interruptions.Leadership / People / Team Management (if applicable):Technical Leadership & CoachingMentor and develop mine planning engineers and graduate engineers through structured review, coaching, and on‑the‑job training to build capability and consistency.Allocate work and provide technical assurance of plans, designs, and reports to maintain quality, timeliness, and stakeholder confidence.Promote a culture of knowledge sharing, learning, and continuous improvement within the planning function.Stakeholder Engagement & AlignmentFacilitate cross‑functional planning reviews to align priorities, manage constraints, and secure agreement on executable plans and forecasts.Communicate planning intent, risks, and trade‑offs clearly to operations and leadership to enable timely decisions and effective execution.Financial / Budget / Asset / Resource Management (if applicable):Budgeting & Cost OptimisationPrepare planning inputs for the annual budget, including haulage analysis, equipment productivity assumptions, and cost optimisation opportunities.Evaluate trade‑offs (cost, risk, productivity, recovery) and recommend actions that protect value while meeting safety and compliance requirements.Resource & Contractor ManagementManage assigned planning resources and coordinate consultant/contractor technical deliverables to meet scope, quality, and schedule requirements.Maintain disciplined use of planning tools and data to support cost-effective delivery of technical services.Job RequirementsEducation & ExperienceEducation: Bachelor’s in Mining Engineering (Minimum); Master’s in Mining Systems preferred.Experience: * Minimum 5 years post-grad in open-pit mining. At least 2 years specifically in mine planning or technical services.Licenses: Site open-pit permit/authorization and a valid driving license.🛠 Technical Skills & KnowledgeSoftware: Proficiency in Surpac/Vulcan (design), Alastri (scheduling/forecasting), and Whittle (optimization).Planning: Expertise in short-to-long-term scheduling, pit/dump design (ramps, berms), and geotechnical controls.Operations: Strong understanding of drill & blast interfaces, equipment productivity, and production reconciliation.Economics: Knowledge of cut-off grade concepts, mineral economics, and JORC-aligned reserve reporting.🗣 Languages & EnvironmentArabic: Professional level for safety and supervision.English: Professional level for technical reporting and vendor management.Work Setting: Split between office and field; requires frequent pit visits and the ability to handle high-pressure budget/planning cycles.Job Location & Accommodation• Sukari Gold Mines, Red Sea – Marsa Alam • Roster and accommodation as per site policy • Home-to-site transportation provided • Full accommodation and well-being facilities provided
