Job Purpose: This role ensures the operational excellence, safety, and academic readiness of the department’s laboratories and technical facilities. It involves the complete lifecycle management of technical assets, from installation, configuration, and maintenance to eventual upgrade or disposal. The lab engineer serves as a critical technical partner to the academic community, providing expert support to faculty, researchers, and students in conducting experiments and other lab work, capstone projects, and advanced research, while ensuring full compliance with international safety standards and efficient resource management.Core Responsibilities:Laboratory Operations and Technical Maintenance:Install, configure, and maintain a diverse range of laboratory equipment and infrastructurePerform regular preventative maintenance, calibration, software updates, and complex troubleshooting to ensure equipment is in optimal working conditionDiagnose hardware and software malfunctions, performing repairs where possible or liaising with external vendors and manufacturers for major service interventionsDevelop and update technical manuals, equipment operational guides, and maintenance schedulesAcademic and Research Support:Manage user access credentials, provide technical training and guidance to undergraduate and graduate students on the safe and effective use of sophisticated machinery and softwareSupport faculty and researchers in designing experimental setups for thesis work, research grants, and senior projectsAssist in the organization of technical workshops, science shows, and departmental eventsSafety, Health and Compliance:Implement and enforce the University’s environmental health and safety (EHS) policies within the laboratoriesConduct regular risk assessments and hazard identifications for new equipment or processesManage the proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials, i.e. chemicals and waste, and ensure the availability of functioning safety gear and first aid kitsMaintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment, ensuring access control and security of high-value assetsLogistics, Procurement and Administration:Manage the laboratory inventory, including spare parts, tools, and consumables, ensuring adequate stock levels for the academic yearConduct market surveys and collect technical quotations for the procurement of new equipment and suppliesParticipate in the planning of laboratory upgrades and capital equipment budgetsGeneral Support:Perform other related duties as assignedQualifications:Education and Experience:B.Sc. in engineering, computer science, electronics, mechanical, architecture, or a relevant field is requiredM.Sc. degree in a related field is an assetFive to seven years of progressively responsible experienceDemonstrated ability in complex troubleshooting and user trainingSkills:Advanced Problem Solving: Advanced diagnostic skills for sophisticated machinery and software systemsSpecialized Knowledge: Certification or deep expertise in specific areasDemonstrated ability to support research in a related disciplineThis position is open until June 15, 2026.Placement is based on the candidate’s experience and skills.
